Spelthorne Borough Council has paid out over £13million in government grants to local businesses, with the recent wave of discretionary grants making a big impact on small businesses.

The Council has awarded £507,500 to 109 small businesses via the discretionary business grant fund scheme to help them survive during these unprecedented economic times. Further to this, the Council paid out £5,575,000 to 268 businesses in the hospitality sector. Spelthorne also provided £7,120,000 to 712 small businesses in the Borough. In total, the Council have issued grants worth £13,202,500.

The discretionary grants have had a sizable impact with business owners telling us that the funds have allowed them to keep operating. Staff have received a multitude of thank you messages for their diligence in handling the business grants.

Cllr Tony Mitchell, Portfolio Holder for Economic Development, said: "Businesses have had a difficult time over the past few months and it is vital that the Council supported them financially. The feedback we have received, especially from small, independent businesses has been incredibly heart-warming and our staff have been doing everything they can to support our high streets. This has also included signposting local businesses to various agencies that can offer them specialist help and support as they aim to recover from the last few months."

The Council are also advising residents to keep an eye out for Spelthorne restaurants, cafes and pubs that have registered with the 'eat out to help out' scheme. The government scheme will run from 3-31 August on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. You will be able to receive up to a 50 per cent discount, up to a maximum of £10 per person, for food and non-alcoholic drinks.

If your business would like to register for the scheme, please visit the government's website: www.gov.uk/guidance/register-your-establishment-for-the-eat-out-to-help-out-scheme
