Spelthorne Borough Council is pleased to announce that Sunbury and Spelthorne Leisure Centres will be reopening from Saturday 1 August.
The Government recently gave the go-ahead for leisure facilities to reopen their doors and the Council has been working closely with centre operators, Everyone Active, to ensure all the necessary measures are in place to allow activities to resume in line with the guidance. More details about these measures can be found here.
The swimming pool facilities at Spelthorne Leisure Centre will reopen from 1 August, with a lane booking system in place. Swimming lessons will re-start from 22 August.
Swimming pool facilities at Sunbury Leisure Centre will remain closed at present due to ongoing repair works. Those with swim and swim lesson memberships at Sunbury will be contacted directly with an update about use of the pool facilities at Spelthorne Leisure Centre.
Spelthorne Borough Council has agreed a one-off financial support package for Everyone Active for the current financial year to enable our centres to reopen on 1 August. In announcing this the Leader of the Council, Cllr John Boughtflower, stated:"It has been essential for the Council to work closely with Everyone Active to negotiate a financial support package that enables them to get our leisure centres up and running again. I believe that this is a good deal for the Borough's residents, who have had to face a long time stuck at home during the lockdown. I know that many of them are desperate to get back to some form of normality and return to the sports and fitness activities they used to do. The facilities our centres provide are so important to so many people, clubs and schools; so it is essential that we get them open as quickly as possible."
Cllr Rose Chandler, Spelthorne Council's Portfolio Holder for Leisure, said: "Our leisure centres play a vital role in the health and wellbeing of our community and we are very excited about reopening Spelthorne and Sunbury Leisure Centres. Many residents have greatly missed their usual leisure activities and exercise regimes and will be very pleased to hear that most of the facilities will be soon be available. Ensuring everyone's safety is of course our main priority so please check the guidance before you visit and we look forward to welcoming you back very soon."
Karl Miles, Everyone Active's area contract manager, said: "We're very much looking forward to reopening the centres and welcoming back the local community. After being closed for nearly four months, this latest announcement from Government is the news the leisure industry has been eagerly awaiting. Giving people the opportunity to resume activity and exercise in their leisure centre will go a long way to maintaining the good health of local communities. We thank Spelthorne Borough Council for supporting Everyone Active and thank you for your understanding and patience whilst we've been closed."
