Dumsey Meadow improvements
Some locals may be wondering why the hay in Dumsey Meadow in Shepperton is currently 'as high as an elephant's eye'.
The answer will soon be clear for all to see when the annual hay cut takes place - it is hoped, within the next fortnight.
A programme of hay cutting, in tune with more traditional management for flood plains of this sort, has been re-introduced this year. It is thought that the historic timing of this cut is the reason that the Chertsey and Shepperton Regatta, held alongside the Meadow, is held annually at this time of year. After the hay cut but before the Cattle return to graze the meadow late into the year. The Regatta, now in its 150th year, will this year be held on Saturday 4 August.
There are also additional plans for the boundary hedge to be laid in November, another traditional form of management that will improve the site for both the wildlife and the visiting public.
Councillor Robert Watts, Cabinet Member for the Environment said: "Managing a meadow in an urban environment can be quite challenging and opinions vary. It also depends very much on the climatic conditions.
"Dumsey Meadow is a Site of Special Scientific Interest and we are working hard to protect it as a vital habitat for important flora and fauna such as ground nesting birds and invertebrates.
