Contaminated Land Inspection Strategy
A strategic approach must be taken to identify land that requires a detailed study to determine whether or not it is contaminated. Legislation requires that this strategic approach must: -

  • be rational, ordered and efficient.
  • be proportionate to the seriousness of any actual or potential risk.
  • seek to ensure that the most pressing and serious problems are located first.
  • ensure that resources are concentrated on investigating in areas where the authority is most likely to identify contaminated land.
  • ensure that the local authority efficiently identifies requirements for the detailed inspection of particular areas of land.
  • take into account local circumstances of receptor types, geology, hydrogeology, available information on contamination, potentially contaminative industries, past redevelopment and remediation, interests of other regulatory authorities.
Spelthorne Council have developed their contaminated land inspection strategy in consultation with the Environment Agency and other appropriate public authorities.
