Drains and sewers
As the statutory undertaker, the Thames Water Authority is responsible for the maintenance of the public sewage system in Spelthorne including repairs and cleaning.

Owner/occupiers of buildings are responsible for the cleaning, repair and maintenance of the drain that links their building to the public sewer.  Where the drains of two or more buildings join, before connecting with the public sewer, the owners have a joint responsibility. These are called private sewers.

Maintenance

  • drains and sewers are generally designed to be self cleaning, but like all other parts of  a building, should be examined to find out if any repairs are needed, particularly to manholes, ensuring that covers and frames are secure.

  • avoid putting nappies and other bulky items down the toilet.

  • lift manhole covers on occasions, and hose down or jet wash.
If you wish to report a blockage in the public sewage system contact Thames Water on 08459 200800. However, Thames Water are under no obligation to clear the blockage and may suggest that you employ a private contractor.
