Social housing
We often refer to Housing Association homes as 'social housing'. You can register for social housing by completing the Housing Register Application form (Pdf 122kb).  It is important to understand that social housing in the Borough is limited so unless you have medical, social or welfare grounds, it is unlikely that you will be re-housed through this route at all. The exception to this is for applicants who are aged over 60 years old and would like to live in sheltered accommodation. This is because there are often more elderly and sheltered housing units available.

You should consider whether you can stay in your family home as it is:
  • cheaper than other accommodation so you can save money
  • a more supportive environment during difficult periods in your life such as having a baby
If you voluntarily leave you could be seen to be making yourself homeless.  Under the SEARCH Moves guidelines you will be placed in the lowest prioity band for social housing if you make your housing circumstances worse.

We understand that it is not always easy to remain at home. We can refer you to a mediation (external website) service to help you and your family to find solutions to your problems.
