What is the aim of Spelthorne Meals Service?

Spelthorne Meals Service aims to encourage people to remain independent and in their own home. Making sure that people have at least one hot, nutritious meal a day is very important for healthy living. People of all ages, who find it difficult or impossible to prepare a daily meal can benefit from the home-delivered meals service provided by Spelthorne Borough Council.

Spelthorne Meal Service will deliver a hot meal for up to seven days a week to anybody in the community who meets the criteria of the service (Weekend and Bank Holiday service is provided only to those who are most in need and have been referred by social services). Meals can be provided for short periods of time (e.g. in the event of illness or when somebody who normally provides a meal is on holiday) or can be provided on a long term basis.

What does Spelthorne Meals Service offer?

We provide a selection of tasty and nutritious hot meals which are delivered to client's homes between 11am and 2pm by our friendly and helpful staff / volunteers.
Frozen meals are available at weekends and bank holidays for those people who are unable to cook but are capable of heating a frozen meal.

Hot meals consist of a main course and pudding. There is a varied menu which includes vegetarian options, howeverspecial health and dietary requirements such as diabetes and soft diet meals are taken into account as a priority. Examples of meals include:

How much does it cost?

The cost of either a hot or frozen main meal and pudding is £3.20. Invoices are sent to client's monthly in arrears. These can be paid for by the client, the client's relatives / friends or on occasions by social services if they are receiving other benefits. Payment can be made by direct debit or at the post office.

Who is eligible for this service?

The person receiving meals on wheels must live within the Borough of Spelthorne.

We accept self referrals or referrals from friends, family or health care professionals.  The service is specifically aimed to help people who are unable to feed themselves, and is a subsidised services.  Customers will be assessed and are required to meet a set criteria.
The client must be:
  • living alone or are alone in the daytime during mealtimes
  • unable to prepare or cook for themselves
  • housebound and unable to shop for a main meal
  • at risk of malnutrition
  • unaware of time and/or need for regular meals, where there is clear evidence of confusion.
If referral to the service is by a health professional meals can commence the next working day. This will be followed by a home assessment within 20 working days.

If referral to the service is by a family member/friend a home assessment is required before meals can commence. We have 10 working days to complete this assessment.

Volunteering

We rely on volunteers to help deliver meals to our customers and always welcome new volunteers. Do you have any spare time, or know of someone who has, and would be able to help us deliver meals? Whether this is once a week, a couple of times a month, or whenever you have a free day. If you think you can help, please visit your local day centre or give us a call and we will put you in touch with the most convenient location for you. You will be required to undertake an Enhanced Criminal Records Bureau Disclosure (CRB) check prior to commencing.
