Does the Council work with Ethnic Minority groups in the Borough?
No but we are working towards identifying these groups within the Borough this year.

How do I make a complaint if I feel that the Council has failed to comply with its Race Equality Scheme (i.e. has discriminated against someone on racial grounds or has not promoted equal opportunities)?
The Council will respond to complaints that it has not fulfilled its statutory duties and will seek to resolve such complaints. When a person believes that they have been affected by a failure of the Council to comply with the Scheme, they should, in the first instance, bring the complaint to the attention of Customer Services or the relevant Head of Service.

I am victim of racial harassment- what should I do?
If you are experiencing racial harassment, it is important that you tell someone before it gets any worse. In an emergency, you should contact the police on 999. To report a less urgent incident please call Surrey Police on 0845 125 2222 or if it is racist graffiti, you can call the Graffiti Police Hotline on 0800 280 284.

Is there an interpretation service at the Council for those people that don’t speak English?
Yes, information is available at Reception.

What does the Race Relations (Amendment) Act 2000 actually mean?
The government believes that public authorities, within their role as employers, policy makers and service providers, should lead by example in eliminating unlawful racial discrimination and promoting race equality. In line with Spelthorne’s vision for a cleaner, safer, more prosperous borough, the Council is committed to ensuring that it meets the needs of all ethnic groups within the borough in all aspects of service delivery. It is acknowledged that we live in an unequal society and the Council is committed to the removal of all barriers to race equality. Spelthorne Borough Council aims to eliminate unlawful racial discrimination and promote equality of opportunity and good race relations. The Council will work towards providing an appropriate and professional service to all citizens of and visitors to the borough regardless of colour, culture or ethnic origin. In order to promote race equality we aim to provide facilities that encourage inclusion of all sections of the community and develop policies, which strengthen and enable all groups to contribute effectively.
