Inspire your community to get more active in 2012 Community Games are a way for communities across Spelthorne to come together to stage their own local event and feel part of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Community Games include sporting and cultural activities and are run by, and for, local communities.  A “community” could be a geographical area, faith group, residents association, school, business or simply a group of like-minded people. A Community Games is likely to be a new event, but support is also available to enhance / expand existing events. Support available to communities Communities can benefit from a range of free tools and resources including:
  • The Community Games toolkit (containing a wealth of valuable information and tips for organising an event, large or small)
  • T-shirts, bunting and certificates
  • Bespoke posters and postcards
  • Event marketing on the national website, www.communitygames.org.uk
  • Free training to help volunteers to organise and market a successful event
  • Up to £200 grant funding (subject to conditions).

Road Race Vantage Point Capacity IncreasedLOCOG given green light to increase spectator capacity on one of the best vantage points of the Olympic Cycling Road Race route Survey shows National Trust land will benefit from work done in the area The London Organising Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) today confirmed that one of the best vantage points on the Olympic Road Race route will have a spectator capacity of up to 15,000. Five months of detailed work, following the London Surrey Cycle Classic test event in August, have enabled the spectator capacity on the Zig-Zag Road incline and Donkey Green area of Box Hill in Surrey to increase from 3,500. The final capacity will be confirmed when the work is completed and a health and safety report is carried out.Ticketing plans for this area will be released in due course  For further information go to www.london2012.com
Sport MakersSport Makers aims to inspire over 1,900 people in South London and Surrey to get involved, with each of them spending at least 10 hours organising or leading sporting activities. SOS (Spelthorne) Kayaking ClubA partnership is to be formed between Special Olympics Surrey and the Surrey Canoe Club to provide Kayaking as a new sport for SOS.  This club will be called the SOS (Spelthorne) Kayaking Club.  Once funding is found for this new sport it is hoped it will be fully operational in October 2011.  View the full press release or contact Special Olympics Surrey, Sue Frett on 07786 448922 or specialolympicssurrey@googlemail.com. Boccia 2012 - volunteers neededAs a lead up to the Paralympics, this joint project between Reigate & Redhill YMCA and Surrey County Council Learning Disability Partnership Board is raising awareness of the sport Boccia, across all 11 Borough's of Surrey, with the aim to go and play at a minimum of 8 venues per Borough, such as Town Halls, Offices and Libraries for in-house competitions culminating in Surrey's boccia 2012 Festival Day. Surrey County Council has a website to help people benefit from the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic GamesSurrey2012.info (external website) features a host of valuable information for residents, businesses and visitors to help the county benefit from the estimated £1 billion boost to the economy the Games will generate. It also shows residents how they can get more involved in sport, become a Games volunteer and features a list of events and activities taking place across Surrey. The website will help businesses find out about winning Olympic contracts, staff training and taking advantage of increased tourism before, during and after the Games.  Tourists planning to come to the South East can discover a host of information on accommodation, attractions and transport links to encourage them to stay in Surrey. The website is updated everyday, so keep updated and check regularly!
