Skiffers and punters will be dressed in Edwardian costume and residents are encouraged to come along in Edwardian style dress too. Museum and local history volunteers will also be on-hand to provide information about the history of the event. The Mayor’s flotilla celebrating the 12th Annual River Day will also arrive at the regatta in time for the re enactment. The flotilla will depart from the Thames Lodge Hotel at 9.30am and travel through the four locks of Penton Hook, Chertsey, Shepperton and Sunbury to arrive at Rivermead Island to join the Sunbury Regatta at around 1.30pm. The Mayor, Cllr Sam Budd, will be rowed in a Henry V111 style shallop and will be joined by Spelthorne MP Kwasi Kwarteng and former Mayors of Spelthorne. Cllr Penny Forbes-Forsyth, Cabinet Member for Parks and Leisure said: “This fantastic annual event sets precisely the right note for the rest of the borough. We plan to restore the Borough’s Thames-based roots with a host of initiatives from new facilities for visitors to fun-filled riverside events. It’s great that Sunbury is leading where the rest of the Borough will follow. The regatta is a very special annual event for Sunbury and this year the Edwardian re-enactment is going to give us a fascinating look-back-in-time. It’s going to be a great day and everyone is welcome.” Spelthorne Council and the Sunbury Regatta Committee are organising the event with support from the Sunbury and Shepperton Local History Society. The re-enactment event is part of the Surrey Sporting Life programme which is being co-ordinated throughout Surrey by Surrey Heritage as part of the Cultural Olympiad events and the build up to the Olympic and Paralymic games in 2012.
