Borough BulletinPublished 23.03.2011 13:49Spelthorne Leisure Centre’s exercise referral scheme has become the first scheme in the country to be accredited with silver status in the ‘Recognising Excellence’ scheme. Recognising Excellence is a system developed in the South East that enables exercise referral schemes to be recognised for achieving high standards in the design, implementation and evaluation of their exercise and fitness services. The scheme benchmarks these services against a set of recognised standards and provides referring GPs and healthcare professionals with information about exercise programmes in their area. The Leisure Centre worked in partnership with Spelthorne Borough Council and NHS Surrey and is one of only two centres in the country to gain accreditation. Helen Durbridge, Sport and Active Lifestyle Officer said: “We are extremely pleased that the scheme has gained this accreditation and has been part of the pilot project. This will ensure that the scheme continues to deliver a high quality service for those attending and will hopefully encourage even more people to sign up for exercise referral.”Luke Charlton, Fitness Manager for Spelthorne Leisure Centre said: “This is an outstanding achievement of which we are very proud. Going through the accreditation was a great opportunity to see how our scheme runs here at Spelthorne Leisure Centre and a great way of getting feedback so that we can improve the scheme moving forward. Our GP Referral Manager, Chris Hughes, and his team are delighted to have achieved the accreditation. This was a real team effort between Everyone Active, Spelthorne Borough Council and NHS Surrey.”For media enquiries contact the Communications Team on 01784 444260.
