Published 26.05.2011 11:58 Two new exhibitions on ‘Sport in Spelthorne’ and ‘Surrey’s Sporting Life’ will be officially opened on Saturday 4 June at 2pm at Spelthorne Museum (in Staines Library).  The exhibitions are part of the cultural Olympiad events to celebrate Surrey’s sporting heritage and mark the countdown to London 2012. The exhibitions will be opened by Staines resident, Bill Nankeville, who ran for Great Britain in the last London Olympics in 1948 and at Helsinki in 1952. Bill, who was part of a world record-breaking relay team with Roger Bannister and Chris Chataway, is also the father of well-known comedian and actor Bobby Davro. The Surrey’s Sporting Life exhibition will be displayed in the Elmsleigh room and is open Monday-Saturday during library opening hours. The Sport in Spelthorne exhibition is displayed in the Thames Room and includes the history of many of the sports clubs throughout the Borough.  This will be open on Wednesdays and Fridays from 2-4pm and Saturdays from 1.30-4.30pm. Museum spokesman Nick Pollard commented: “We are delighted to be able to invite along Bill Nankeville to open the exhibitions. He literally has a great track record and is a real local link with the last London Olympics. We hope the displays will encourage the local community to find out just what a rich sporting heritage the Borough and the County have”. Admission to Spelthorne Museum and the exhibitions is free. Surrey’s Sporting Life exhibition will run until 18 June and the Sport in Spelthorne exhibition will be displayed until the end of the year.
