Borough BulletinPublished 27.07.2011 16:45The Council is undertaking a statutory review of its Polling Districts, Places and Stations to ensure that electors have suitable, convenient and accessible places to vote.Formal notice of the Review has been published and a review document outlining the process and draft proposals with maps has been sent to a wide range of interested parties, including Residents Associations’. It is also available to view online. The draft proposals include a reduction in the total number of premises from 37 to 33 and a reduction of 15 in the number of individual polling stations used within premises.Compared with other Councils in Surrey and the South East generally, Spelthorne has a higher than average number of polling stations for its electorate. The Borough has a total of 69 stations for an electorate of 72,647, giving an average of 1052 electors per station. This compares with a Surrey average of 1500 electors per station. As part of the Review, the Council is seeking to reduce the number of stations to bring it into line with ratios elsewhere. Commenting on the Review, Councillor Colin Davis, Cabinet Member for Economic Development said: “I would encourage all intended parties to study and comment upon the proposals so their views can be considered as part of the consultation. Whilst we need to ensure that facilities are suitable, we are also aware that our costs are higher than elsewhere and we are looking to rationalise the number of premises used and the number of individual polling stations.”Comments should be sent, preferably using the pre-prepared comment sheets contained in the review pack, to:-The Electoral Services Manager Room 110 Spelthorne Borough Council Council Offices Knowle Green Staines, TW18 1XBThey can also be e-mailed to electoral.services@spelthorne.gov.uk or faxed to 01784 446341.The closing date for comments is Wednesday 17 August. For media enquiries contact the Communications Team on 01784 444260.
