Date March 2006
Aims The Council wanted to find out whether or not disabled residents felt they were discriminated against when accessing the Council’s services and what role they would like to see the Council play in combating discrimination. From December 2006, the Council will have a legal duty to actively look at ways of making sure that disabled people are treated equally.
Methodology The Council commissioned Conquest Research to carry out 22 depth interviews with disabled residents, including those with physical, sensory, learning, psychiatric and neurological disabilities.
Main Findings Key findings from the research suggest:
  • those with a disability do not currently feel that they have equality with other residents in the borough
  • certain services are less accessible to them than other residents
  • they are not always able to communicate with the Council in the way they would like
  • they do not always receive information in a format they can access
  • a database of those with a disability could be used to target information about what is available
  • the best way for the Council to promote a positive attitude would be to facilitate greater integration.

Additional Information The Council will be producing its Disability Equality Scheme, including an action plan setting out what it will do to make sure disabled people are treated equally by 5 December 2006.
