Staines air disaster rememberedMemorial services were held today to mark the anniversary of the 1972 Staines air disaster in which 118 people lost their lives when Flight BE548 crashed in Staines shortly after taking off from Heathrow.Prayers were said by Reverend Rod Cosh and the Bishop of Kensington and a wreath was laid by Cllr John O’Hara, the Mayor of Spelthorne at Moormede Recreation Ground in Staines. A service was held afterwards at the St Mary’s Church in Church Street, Staines led by Bishop Paul Williams, the Bishop of Kensington. The Mayor said: “This date will always have special significance for the people of Spelthorne and many of us have vivid memories of that terrible day. It’s important to take the time to remember and show our respect to the families of those who lost their lives.” A stained-glass window was installed in St Mary's Church in 2004 to commemorate the disaster and a memorial book containing the names of all the victims of the disaster is also kept there.
Take simple steps to avoid food poisoningSpelthorne Council is reminding people in the Borough about the importance of good food hygiene in the home. This is particularly important during the summer months, when levels of food poisoning soar. There are around 120,000 extra cases of food borne illness recorded across the UK when the weather is warmest.Spelthorne Council will be setting up a stall in the Elmsleigh shopping centre in Staines on Wednesday 30 June to promote good hygiene practices and help people learn more about the simple things they can do to keep themselves and their families safe. There will be demonstrations and people can enter a food hygiene quiz with the chance of winning a £15 Marks and Spencer voucher.Councillor Bhadye, Cabinet Member for Health and Independent living said: “We expect to see the number of food poisoning cases to increase as the weather gets warmer and barbeques and eating outside become more frequent. People should not worry unduly about food poisoning; there are some simple common sense steps they can take to avoid getting ill. Just storing, handling and cooking food properly will minimise the risk”. London Irish planning applicationsMinutes from meeting held on 27 April 2010London Irish have until the end of October to appeal the refusal of their two planning applications for the Hazelwood Golf Course and The Avenue site. The applications were for the development of a rugby ‘centre of excellence’ at Hazelwood, and a mixed use development of 194 residential units, care home and site for a potential health centre at The Avenue. If there is an appeal, the Council will notify all those who made comments on the original planning applications that an appeal has been lodged, and where and when it will be held. It will be within the Borough.
AirtrackBAA submitted proposals to the Secretary of State for Transport back in July 2009 to provide a new rail link to Heathrow called Airtrack. This was submitted under what is known as a Transport and Works Act Order. It involves building new track in Staines town centre and from the Windsor line to Stanwell Moor, substantially rebuilding Staines Station and a new train depot at Feltham.A public consultation on the BAA Airtrack proposals ran from Friday 24 July to Friday 18 September 2009.Full details of the proposals are available on BAA’s Heathrow Airtrack website www.heathrowairport.com/airtrack or can be viewed at the Council Offices, Knowle Green or at Staines and Stanwell libraries. The Council considered its response to the proposals at a special meeting of its Cabinet on Thursday 17 September 2009 and raised 79 specific objections which have been submitted to the Secretary of State.Further information has been submitted on the Environmental Statement. This is subject to a six week consultation period which runs until 23 June. The extra detail does not address the Council’s numerous concerns and the Council will respond accordingly.A public inquiry is likely to be held towards the end of this year. No firm date has been set.
Lower Sunbury riverside applicationA planning application to develop the Environment Agency site by the river on Fordbridge Road, Lower Sunbury is going to appeal. Linden Homes had an application to develop the site for 88 houses rejected by councillors in November 2009 on the grounds of overdevelopment, lack of open space and an adverse impact on the riverside setting. Those people who objected to the application have been notified of the appeal. No date has been set for a public inquiry but it is likely to be late autumn.
Majestic House StainesA major application to develop the former Majestic House site in Staines High Street for offices, housing, leisure, retail, and a public piazza will be considered at the Council’s next Planning Committee meeting on 23 June. Related documents are available on our website. This is an outline application encompassing former offices in Millmead and includes the former Post Sorting Office site and a pair of semi-detached properties. If approved the wider benefits of the scheme would include the provision of affordable housing, a new link road between Fairfield Road and Millmead, and financial contributions towards alternative forms of transport, public art, CCTV and education.
