Can I vote at this election? You can only vote if you are 18 (or over),a British, Irish Republic or Commonwealth citizen and on the Electoral Register.
Am I registered to vote? Poll cards are sent to eligible voters and will be delivered as soon a possible. If you have only recently applied to go on the Electoral Register, your registration confirmation/poll card will not be posted until 6 working days before the election.
If I’m not registered how do I register for future elections? You can download an application form from the Council’s website or we can post one to you. Applications for this Election must be received by Electoral Services no later than 11 working days before the electionl.
I’m a student and not sure where I should register to vote? Students are entitled to register at both their home and university address. However you are only allowed to vote from one of the addresses. It is an offence if you vote from both.
I will not be able to vote in person. What can I do? You can apply for a postal or proxy vote - a proxy means that another elector can vote your behalf.

I have missed the deadline for a postal vote, what can I do? You still have time for a proxy vote and can download an application form from the Council’s website or we can post one to you. We must receive your application form back by 5pm on the 6 working day before the election.
I haven’t received my postal ballot paper yet. We can only reissue a postal vote from the 5th day before polling day. You can get a replacement ballot paper in person from Electoral Services, up until 5pm on polling day.
I opted for a postal vote but I don’t want to post it / it’s too late to post it. No problem. You can delivery your postal vote pack (with ballot paper) to your normal polling station during polling hours. You can also bring it to the Council Offices during the run up to polling daybut make sure you do this before 10pm on Election day.
Who can apply for a proxy vote? Anyone can apply for a proxy for a specific election, but you must state the reason why you are not able to go to your polling station on election day. You can download an application form from the Council’s website or we can post one to you. We must receive your application form back by 5pm on the 6 working day befire the election. If you already have a postal vote already in place this must be cancelled in writing first.

Someone has suddenly been taken ill / been in an accident can they still vote? They can apply to vote by proxy for emergency medical reasons up until 5pm on election day. You will need to get a form from us which you will then need to take away and get countersigned by the voter’s doctor.
I’ve been made a proxy for someone and I don’t know how it works. It’s simple to vote as someone’s proxy. You will be sent a special proxy poll card with details of where you should go to cast their vote. When you are going to the polling station just tell the staff there that you are voting as a proxy and they will tell you what to do. Don’t forget to take your proxy poll card – this will speed up issuing the ballot papers. The person you are voting for can still go to the polling station to cast their vote but he/she will have to go to the polling station before you. If you can’t attend the polling station you can vote as a proxy by post, but you must apply by 5pm on the 11 working day before the election.
How do I find out where my polling station is? Your poll card will tell you the location of your polling station or you can look on the Council’s website – “My Spelthorne” to find your polling station.

Do I need to take my poll card to the polling station? No, you will be asked to provide your name and address to the staff at the polling station but taking it with you will speed up the process.
Do I have to vote? No, registration is compulsory during the canvass but voting is not.
Who are the candidates? Once all the candidates have submitted their Nomination papers they can be found in the polling station, on our website, at the Council Offices and on notice boards around the borough.
What do they stand for? The council have to remain impartial and it is down to the candidates/political parties to promote themselves so unfortunately we are not able to supply that information.

I’ve received a poll card for my young child It may be that there details were added to the canvass form we received last year. Please inform Electoral Services in writing.
When will the results be available? The Count will start at 10am on Friday and we hope to announce the results some time in the afternoon. They will then be posted on our website, at the Council Offices and on notice boards as soon as practicably possible.
Can I come to the Count? No, unfortunately the count is not open to the public. Only those persons officially appointed are able to attend.
