These activities have been designed to tie in to the National Numeracy Strategy and areas of the curriculum including PSHE, Education for Sustainable Development, Science, Geography and Citizenship.
They are structured in units that can be presented either as single lessons or as part of a wider programme. Although the worksheets have been aimed at Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 pupils, it is possible to use them with older groups. Notes on differentiation are given as guidelines but teachers should consider for themselves the suitability for their own students.
Energy audit

You can start reducing the energy costs of your school by implementing an ‘energy action plan’. The following steps will get you on the road to creating an energy efficient school:
Understanding your energy use is vital to the success of your energy action plan. An energy audit can be used to identify areas of waste and show you the key areas for improvement and cost saving. It can be conducted as an educational exercise to raise awareness of energy use and motivate action throughout the whole school community. The energy data collected can then form the basis for your own targets.

Waste collection

This is a project based activity encouraging pupils to think about the way waste is managed with an emphasis on why recycling and waste minimisation is necessary in modern society. Taking the form of a role play, the class devises a contract to collect classroom waste and puts it out to tender. They then consider the implications of waste collection and disposal within a wider context.

The exercise can be used in a practical way to help pupils devise a fair and useful collection system through which they can collect recyclables from the classroom and deliver them to the bins.

Waste audit

The aim of a waste audit is to measure the weight and types of waste produced by one school in one day and should be an integral part of a school's waste reduction campaign. The Audit can be carried out prior to the implementation of a school action plan to reduce waste and again after the school has implemented actions to reduce waste in order to measure the reduction achieved.

The waste audit guide pack contains session plans, worksheets and guidance toward further ideas including Waste reduction action planning. Equipment can be supplied by the council and an officer will be available to support you through the entire process including discussion with pupils, parents and staff. This is an activity, the results of which will affect the whole school and it is something that the whole school community can get involved in.
