Your council is concerned about climate change and the environment. We know that every aspect of our energy usage needs to be made as efficient as possible. We are taking action to make sure that this is the case.
Carbon Trust
In 2005 we became part of the Carbon Trusts’ Local Authority Carbon Management Programme. This involved consultation and guidance as well as technical support from the Carbon Trust to help realise carbon emissions savings.
Specifically it focuses on reducing the emissions under the direct control of the council, such as from buildings, fleet vehicles, street lighting and landfill sites.
Energy Champions
The council's offices have nominated 'energy champions'. They are responsible for spreading information among their colleagues concerning energy efficient practises at work. They work to see that this advice is followed as much as possible.
They are also responsible for gathering feedback and suggestions from their co-workers.
Salix
An offshoot of the Carbon Management Program and set up by the Carbon Trust to provide matched funding to local government, the NHS and higher education institutions for investment in energy efficiency projects. A fund is allocated to help with projects that will have a payback period of around five years.
We have been given funding and are currently running projects to provide loft and cavity wall insulation for the council buildings, as well as fitting low energy lighting and controls.
A project to install a CHP or combined heat and power plant to provide for the needs of the council offices and the Spelthorne Leisure Centre is also underway.
South East Climate Change Partnership
The Partnership was established by a range of public, private and voluntary sector organisations across the south east.
They aim to investigate, inform and advise on the impacts of climate change in the region.
