Trees are a vital part of the environment both in the towns and within the countryside. They reduce the amount of air pollution and provide shelter and a source of food for many thousands of insects, mammals and birds. Most noticeably they beautify the landscape. In Spelthorne we are fortunate in having several beautiful open spaces such as Laleham Park, Sunbury Park and Shepperton Manor Park, where the value of trees is obvious. However, the contribution made by trees to smaller open spaces, parks and gardens is perhaps less well appreciated.
In the 1970's Dutch Elm Disease killed thousands of trees and brought home to many people just how bare our landscape would be without them. There is little that can be done to prevent such natural disasters, or indeed, the damage done by the severe storms which have occurred in recent years. However, if future generations are to enjoy the same benefits and the beauty of the trees the present generation has inherited, then it is essential that a continuing programme of tree replacement is undertaken.
