Landfill regulations amendment
As a result of the European Landfill Directive, an amendment to the Landfill Regulations 2002 has been produced. This came into effect on 16 July 2004.

This will have a huge effect on the way contaminated land is dealt with since the preferred method in many years has been dig and dump.  60% of all hazardous waste was contaminated soil.

The cost of disposal to landfill will increase.  The number of landfills able to accept untreated contaminated material has been reduced to 11, which will also affect transport costs.  Also adding to the cost will be the pretreatment of all hazardous waste prior to disposal.

  • co-disposal of hazardous and non-hazardous waste has now been banned.
  • all hazardous waste must be pretreated to reduce volume and the hazardous nature of the waste.
  • by July 2005 all hazardous waste going to landfill must meet EC-wide waste acceptance criteria
