Creating a school energy policy
An Environmental Policy is a written statement outlining an organisation's mission to manage the environmental effects of its work.
By implemeting a formal energy policy, the importance of the schools energy action plan is re-enforced and it makes sure that any financial resources are set aside.
There are a few basic rules to follow to ensure the policy is clear
- Keep the statement short - if it's longer than a sheet of A4, then it's probably too long.
- The statement is meant for everyone to see, so make sure it's easy to read and understand.
- The statement must be realistic, achievable and relevant to your school.
- The statement should be signed, dated and endorsed by the school governers.
Recommended policy criteria
It should describe the school's commitment to energy efficiency and define specific actions.
- Targets should be stated in actual units. For example, "Our average electricity consumption is 29.5kWh per square metre. We aim to reduce this to 25kWh per square metre by July next year."
- Schools with an energy rating certificate may aim to make improvements to attain a higher rating.
- Outline investment plans.
- Describe the monitoring programme and schedule an annual review of performance and policy.
- Individual responsibilities and lines of communication should be defined including meeting arrangements.
- Encourage efficient use of energy in all areas of the school.
- Devise a green procurement policy.
- Commit to raise awareness of the energy management activities and encourage participation of the whole school community in creating an energy efficient school. This may involve training days, guest speakers, themed weeks.
