Heathrow Airport has a major impact on the economy and environment of Spelthorne, and the Council aims to balance the positive and negative impacts on the Borough in considering proposals for further development of the airport.

Terminal 5 was granted permission in November 2001 and is now under construction and is due to be completed in March 2008.

The Government published a White Paper on the Future of Air Transport in 2003.  The White Paper expresses support for a further runway north of the existing airport, between the A4 and M4, provided conditions relating to air noise, air quality and surface access are met.  The White Paper also called for an assessment of the scope for greater use of the existing two runways including "mixed mode" operation, where both runways are used simultaneously for landings and take-offs, rather than the current segregated mode where one is used for landing and one for take-offs.

In response to the White Paper the Government has initiated studies to examine the scope for further growth under the heading: "Project for the Sustainable Development of Heathrow".  A consultation on the results of these studies is expected before the end of the year.
