The role of Environmental Health

The protection of public health is an integral part of Environmental Health policies and includes :-

  • preventing the spread of infectious disease, by investigating cases of food poisoning and reportable diseases.
  • enforcing food safety legislation, in order to prevent food poisoning and food borne illnesses.
  • enforcing health and safety at work legislation in order to improve working conditions and to prevent accidents.
  • preventing injury and illness associated with poor quality housing, by enforcing housing and public health legislation.
  • taking action to control environmental pollution such as air, noise and land pollution.
  • promoting positive health and addressing specific health issues within the community, through health promotion initiatives.
  • preventing the spread of disease from vermin and other pests.
  • improving animal welfare by licensing animal establishments.
  • ensuring that public attending functions are safe, by enforcing entertainment licensing.
