How much will it cost for treatment?
Spelthorne has arranged with a private contractor (Discreet Environmental Services Ltd) to carry out necessary treatments in domestic properties for rats and a variety of other pests at a discounted rate. Prices are shown here.
It is payable directly to the contractor at the time of treatment (cheques should be made out to "Discreet Environmental Services Ltd" and NOT to this Authority).

What if the pest in my house is not removed by you?
All pests of public health significance are covered by our service, but there are other animals or insects that can give problems to householders e.g. squirrels, pigeons, wood-boring insects etc.  In these cases our contractor will estimate for treatment, but clients are advised to “shop around” with other companies, because Spelthorne has not negotiated reduced prices.

Many other creatures are protected from destruction by legislation e.g. bats, voles, stag beetles, many birds and many reptiles including adders.  In these cases we may be able to give advice or put you in touch with specialist organisations that will give advice.

What methods are used?
For the destruction of pests various methods may be used. In order to determine the most effective method of pest control to be used an in depth knowledge of the species involved and its life cycle is required. Physical methods such as rodent traps may be used or alternatively chemicals such as insecticides or rodenticides may be used. However it is imperative that all persons using these control methods are suitably trained.

What types of pests cause problems?
The majority of the pest complaints received by the pest control team arise from rodents (rats and mice), others also include;
  • Ants
  • Wasps
  • Bed bugs
  • Fleas
  • Chironomides
  • Cockroaches
Other insects or mites that are not protected by legislation, that are in such a location or in such numbers to be a nuisance to the householder.

Why is a pest control service required?
A pest control service is required to respond to complaints all around the Borough, both in domestic and commercial premises.  Pests are often a major factor in food complaints and may subsequently lead to food premises closures and prosecutions.  It is essential that pests are controlled to prevent damage to buildings and fittings, distress to inhabitants/customers and the spread of disease.
