Refuse Collection
I live in a flat where wheeled bins are in a particular place. What do I do - will the changes apply to me?
If I leave my bin out when I go on holiday, it will be a clear sign to burglars that I am away. Do you have any suggestions?
Surely it would be better to be able to have different collections of different materials. When are you going to do that?

I live in a flat where wheeled bins are in a particular place. What do I do - will the changes apply to me?
If you live in a block of flats where there is a designated bin area, collections will continue to be made from there.

If I leave my bin out when I go on holiday, it will be a clear sign to burglars that I am away. Do you have any suggestions?
Put your rubbish out in sacks rather than a bin.

Surely it would be better to be able to have different collections of different materials. When are you going to do that?
At present we are not changing the current timetable of recycling collections.  However we will be giving you information about enhancing and expanding recycling, particularly garden waste and multi-materials.

What happens if I cannot get my bin to where it should be collected?
If it is too heavy, try splitting the rubbish into separate bags.  If you really cannot move it yourself, again please get in touch with us on the number above.

What happens if I forget?
The collection day will not change, so there is nothing more you need to remember other than to put the rubbish out in the proper place.  If you do forget, the alternative is to take your rubbish to the Civic Amenity Site at Charlton Lane.

What type of container should I use for my domestic waste?
Your domestic waste should be put in a suitable refuse container or preferably a strong plastic sack

When will my garden waste be collected?
Providing that you have put your garden waste in a sack purchased from Spelthorne Borough Council and it is not overloaded it should be put out at the same time and in the same position as your domestic waste.

Where do I place my domestic waste for collection?
At the front curtilage of your property 6am on the scheduled day of collection.

Why are the changes being made?
The decision to move to this way of collecting rubbish was taken after a review last year.  This highlighted:
  • the need to make the service more efficient and
  • the need to reduce the health and safety risks for collectors.

By making these changes it will cut down on the number of missed bins and collectors taking away things that are not rubbish.

It is also part of the Council's long-term aim of reducing the amount of waste we all produce and encouraging people to think more about recycling.

Will my recyclables be collected at the same time as my domestic waste?
At present there is no change to the current timetable of recycling collection, however as the year progresses we will be advising you of other initiatives relating to enhancing and expanding recycling particularly in relation to garden waste and multi-material kerbside recycling which may involve a change to the current schedule.

Is there a limit to the amount of waste I can put out?
There is no limit as long as your waste is domestic i.e. not garden waste mixed with domestic waste or DIY waste.  We would however encourage you to recycle as much of your waste as possible either in the kerbside recycling collection or by taking it to the "bring sites" located in Spelthorne.
