Spelthorne Sports Awards
On Thursday 15 July, Spelthorne celebrated the successes of players, coaches and volunteers at its annual Sports Awards. This year’s awards, sponsored by Kempton Park, Benedict Ford Thorne Chartered Accountants and Nauticalia, were held in the premier suite at Kempton Park Racecourse.

The awards, organised by Spelthorne Borough Council and Spelthorne Sports Council, recognised those who have performed exceptionally well throughout the year as well as those who have helped others reach their goals or shown exceptional commitment and dedication to their clubs or sport.
Sports Awards 2010

Special guests at the awards were members of Spelbound, Leighanne Cowler, Lauren Kemp, Hollianne Wood, Abi Ralph and Amy McKenzie. The Britain’s Got Talent winners 2010 had just returned from the world championships. The Spelbound members shared their experiences and a DVD was shown of Spelbound’s winning routine.

Spelthorne’s Surrey Youth Games teams were also recognised at the awards for their fantastic achievements at the 2010 Surrey Youth Games. Team Spelthorne won the Surrey County Playing Fields Association’s Fair Play award recognising good sportsmanship and there were a number of medal winning performances including gold in girl’s cricket, MLD boy's football and senior boys hockey.

The winners of the Spelthorne Sports Awards 2010 were:

Junior individual Male
Winner – Sam Preston
A trampolinist ranked number one in England this year and identified at a potential 2016 Olympian.

Junior individual Female
Winner – Emma Christmas
A Staines Swimming Club Swimmer who holds the club record for the fastest 8 year old girl in the 200m individual medley event and is nationally ranked 19th in the 9 year old 200m breaststoke.

Junior Sports Team
Winner – London Irish ARFC under 10’s
Were unbeaten throughout the whole of last season. Won several festivals and the Surrey Championships.

Senior Sports Team
Winner – Colne Valley Ladies
Over came a difficult start to the season to win the Greater London Women’s League Division Two South.

School/College Achievement (winners pictured with the Mayor, Cllr O'Hara)
Winner – Sunbury Manor School, All Within Reach.
A group of children from Sunbury Manor who all, through either disability, vulnerability or social difficulties have mixed together and assist each other enabling many to overcome or accept their differences. All have been selected for county assessment for the playground to podium initiative.

Disability Sports Award
Winner – Jessica Hunter
Jessica is a current member of the England Boccia team and has been selected for the GB Boccia talent development programme for the 2012 Olympics.

Junior Good Sport
Winner – Lydia Jones, Debbie Watson and Siobhan Williams
Three young ladies from Colne Valley Ladies Football Club who stopped the ladies section from folding after the departure of their manager during pre season. They helped with all aspects of running the club, organising matches, pitches, finances etc.

Volunteer of the year
Winner – Andy Woodger
Member of Laleham Archery Club who holds a voluntary National Judge position in the Sport and has also studied for and recently passed the exam to become a European and Mediterranean Archery Union continental judge.

Outstanding individual performance
Winner – Sheree Cox
A shooter who among other achievements has been selected for the Commonwealth Games 2010.

Coach of the year
Winner - Julian Bowskill
A retiring PE teacher from Ashford C of E School who has been involved in coaching many sports to many groups of children enabling them to win district sports, play rugby at Twickenham and the Stoop and Cricket at the Oval.

Sports Club of the Year
Winner – Racqueteers Badminton Club
A badminton club committed to the development of young players and since the club started 27 years ago more than 50 players have gone on to play for the county. Was the first badminton Club in England to achieve the Clubmark accreditation.

Exceptional services to Sport
Winner – Alan Wilson
Secretary of Anglo Saxon FC where he has been involved with running football teams for over 30 years. Also Headteacher of Echelford School

Special Achievement Award
Winner – Spelbound
Britain’s got talent winners 2010
