Stanwell Lantern Parade returns

Stanwell Lantern Parade Stanwell Lantern Parade Performance

The first Stanwell lantern parade was a “Celebratory Arts” project supported by Spelthorne Borough Council and Arts Partnership Surrey. Donations were made by the Lord Knyvett trust and the Local Strategic Partnership using funds provided by Surrey Police for charitable purposes. Divisional Commander for North Surrey Police, Chief Superintendent Richard Morris said;

“I am delighted that the money is being used to help fund the Stanwell lantern parade, which I know will be a happy occasion and give a lot of pleasure to local residents”.

Celebratory Arts is a form of arts and crafts where people come together in celebration of their community and their town or village through creative activities and events.

Members of the community decided on the theme for this year’s parade as ‘the Traditional Stanwell Fayre’. In response local artists created large carnival lanterns in the shape of the Stanwell Rose, swinging bells and a toy drum.

Approximately 130 children from Stanwell Beavers and Cubs, Town Farm Primary School, Christ the King RC Primary School and Stanwell Fields primary School worked with professional artists to create spectacular willow and paper lanterns.Some children also took part in an Open lantern-making workshop.

Aided by local police officers and Led by professional drummers ‘Rhythms of the City,’ the lanterns were lit and paraded through Stanwell beginning at the Stanwell centre and walking through the village ending at Stanwell Village Hall. Along the way residents came out of their houses to witness the extraordinary event. Along with the children carrying lanterns were parents, teachers, friends and relatives who all joined in the parade to end with rapturous applause at the Stanwell Village Hall.

A short theatre piece devised by Spelthorne Youth Theatre Company called ‘Stanwell, The Story so Far….’ was performed at the end of the parade within the Village Hall. The piece which was created by the 8-11year olds focussed on the theme of the social history of Stanwell and was kindly funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund. The local Women’s Institute kindly provided the audience and elated parade participants with a welcome hot chocolate during the performance.
