We also aim to comply with Government guidance on website design and accessibility.
Please refer to the glossary for an explanation of key terms used on this page
What does this mean to people visiting our website?
- No use of frames in the main section of the website
- Use of alternative text descriptions (ALT text) to describe the content of images
- Text only and change contrast areas of the website to provide an alternative non-graphical way of finding your way around the site.
- Access keys including those used in UK Government access key system, plus other Access keys to define main areas of the website.
- We maintain a standard layout to help you find your way around the site
- We use plain backgrounds to improve the readability of text
- All hyperlinks used are descriptive.
- Text size and background colours can be altered
What have we done to ensure that website is accessible?
- When the website was launched in 2003, we undertook extensive testing of the site with a range of users with different abilities. We consulted vision impaired blind and colour blind people to ensure that the foreground and background colour combinations had sufficient contrast and did not cause problems.
- We monitor the Sitemorse reports and respond to changes/suggestions made by them on performance and accessibility.
Are there any areas that are not accessible?
- We use Geographical Information Systems (GIS) on some areas of our website, including maps on the Planning Public Access area. GIS is not accessible, but we believe that the value it adds to the website justifies its use. We are monitoring developments of GIS technology including accessibility issues.
- We use some software provided by external suppliers for internet bookings and payments. As these sites our out of our control we cannot completely guarantee that they are accessible.
- Some documents in PDF are not accessible but we have taken note of the guidance on accessibility from Adobe and are working to apply PDF files on our site with the appropriate tagging. Adobe provide a service to convert PDF documents to plain text or HTML, go to: http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/access_onlinetools.html
