| After consulting English Heritage, the Secretary of State has decided to list Ashford War Memorial, Fordbridge Road, Ashford, as a Grade II listed building. The decision was made to reflect that war memorials have strong historical and cultural significance in both a local and national context. Standing at the junction of Church Road and Fordbridge Road, the striking war memorial at Ashford is a prominent feature in the townscape of Ashford. It is unusual in that it has a World War Two memorial as a freestanding addition. The main memorial is carved in Portland stone, has a three step base and a square column, on which stands a winged figure of Victory. The column has the inscriptions of names and dates of those lives lost in World War One. An additional, simple memorial to those who died in World War Two is placed about 2m away with an inscription across the pages of an open book on one face and the names of those who died on the other. John Packman, Leader of the Council, commented: “This decision means we are able to retain part of our historical heritage. It is a great loss to see buildings of architectural or historical interest being removed to make way for new, less appealing developments. I fully support this listing made by English Heritage and hope the people of Spelthorne, particularly Ashford, share my enthusiasm for protecting this unique war memorial.” For further information please ring 01784 446297 or 444260. |
