![]() Six young people in Spelthorne have completed the MEND Scheme (Mind, Exercise, Nutrition…Do it). The ten-week scheme is part of a national healthy living programme for young people aged 7-13 who would like to adopt a healthier lifestyle. It is being run by Spelthorne Borough Council in partnership with the Surrey Primary Care Trust and has received funding from the Big Lottery. The young people and their parents attended MEND twice a week. They learnt about healthy eating and took part in organised physical activity sessions and active games. The scheme included a supermarket trip where they learned about food labelling and choosing healthy foods. They also took part in a cook and eat evening where the young people cooked and tasted `MEND friendly’ food enabling them to experience new foods and flavours. The young people worked very hard to achieve nutrition and physical activity targets each week and have all gained health benefits from the scheme as well as meeting new friends. The Mayor presented their graduation certificates at the council offices on 15 June. Cllr Denise Grant, Cabinet Member for Young People and Cultural Services said: “I am extremely impressed with the determination to pursue healthier lifestyles which these six young people have shown. The MEND scheme is fantastic and I’m sure that the knowledge the young people have gained will benefit them throughout their lives”. The next MEND scheme will start in late September and will run from 6.15pm–8.15pm on Monday and Thursday evenings for ten weeks. There is no cost to attend the programme but we will need to assess whether a child qualifies, based on their age, weight and health.
