Surrey Youth Games 2009
Spelthorne jointly achieved 1st place at the Surrey Youth Games which took place last weekend.

Approximately 220 young people from Spelthorne took part in the Proctor and Gamble Surrey Youth Games, the largest youth sports event in Surrey. The young people competed against approximately 2000 other young people from across Surrey over 2 days. Team Spelthorne entered 25 teams across 10 sports and put in some fantastic performances to win the overall borough trophy (joint with Guildford) for the second successive year.

Saturday saw some tough competition across a number of sports including boccia, judo, hockey, netball, rugby, and squash. The judo teams won 12 medals across all weight categories and overall gold for the senior girls’ competition and silver for the junior boys and junior girl’s competitions. One of the senior boccia teams won silver as did the mini squash team, putting Team Spelthorne in a good position halfway through the games.

The second day of the competition saw even better results for Spelthorne. The boy’s hockey team and junior badminton teams both put in fantastic performances to win gold. The boy’s basketball team and the high 5 netball team also did extremely well fighting off tough competition to win silver medals. Further medals were won after great performances in junior and senior girl’s football with bronze medals for both teams.

All of Spelthorne’s competitors had received between 6 and 10 weeks coaching in the run up to the games from coaches and volunteers with over 100 coaching sessions being delivered across the Borough. It is hoped that as a result of the coaching and the competition weekend that many of the young people involved will join local sports clubs and continue to participate in their chosen sport.

Councillor Denise Grant, Cabinet Member for Young People and Cultural Services was delighted at the results. She commented “I’m really pleased for everyone involved with Team Spelthorne. There were some great results over the weekend and some excellent team and individual performances. The effort and commitment shown by every player, coach and volunteer involved with Team Spelthorne was phenomenal. To jointly win the borough trophy is a fantastic achievement and everybody involved should be proud of the part they played”

In July all of the young people from Spelthorne who competed in the games will have the opportunity to celebrate their achievements at the annual sports awards evening.
