Young Carer's Awards

At the Council meeting on 24 February, nine young people were recognised and commended for their patience and understanding in caring for a family member or in some cases members.

Sobering presentations were made about how the children have dedicated their childhood years to helping at home and supporting their parents and siblings. Many spoke about the lifeline that going to Surrey Young Carers (SYC) provides. They have the opportunity to meet other young carers in similar situations to themselves and take part in excursions and activity groups.

Ward councillors gave a brief description about why the children had been nominated:

Cllr George Trussler spoke about Wawman sisters Sophie (15) Katie (13) and Abigail (11) who care for their mother Sarah. The girls said: “We love our mum very much and would never change her for the world!”

Cllr Andrew Hirst spoke about Callum Mitchell (12) who cares for his mother Chantelle. Callum said: “At home I help my mum a lot, also my sister who has something wrong with her immune system and goes to Great Ormond Street hospital.”

Cllr Robbie Colison-Crawford spoke about Ollie Walsh (12) who helps care for his younger brother Harry. Ollie said: “We had a great residential with young carers in June last year and it meant a lot to have a break from Harry, as he is 24/7.”

Cllr Ian Beardsmore spoke about Jessica Mahoney (16) who cares for her mother Carol. Jessica said: “I help with the cleaning in the house, I help cook dinner, do shopping and then I also help with personal care such as helping to get into bed.”

Cllr Richard Smith-Ainsley spoke about Henry Vialardi (8) who helps care for his older brother Josh. Henry said: “My brother takes up a lot of mummy and daddy’s time because he needs a lot of extra help. He can also get quite cross when things don’t go right for him.”

Cllr Patricia Amos spoke about the Jennings brothers Joey (18) and Jordan (16) who care for their mother Jasmine. Joey also cares for his brother Jordan. Cllr Patricia Amos said: “Joey became the main carer for his mum, with some help from Jordan after the sudden death of their father in June 2008. Despite everything, Joey continues to care for both his mum and brother.”

The Mayor handed out certificates to each child and photographs were taken with their family, the Mayor and Mayoress. A group photograph was also taken.

Cllr John Packman, Leader of the Council, said: “One of the most moving ceremonies I have ever experienced in the Chamber.”
