Taking the Stress Out of Moving Home
Published 29.09.2003 17:32
A number of Surrey councils including Spelthorne have teamed up with ihavemoved.com, the free online change of address service, to help residents take the hassle out of moving home.

A new interactive section on the local authorities' websites will enable residents who are moving to or from anywhere in Surrey to notify a range of companies and the relevant councils of their new address in one fell swoop, saving them both time and money.

The new convenient feature will take away the burden of informing a list of companies and organisations when changing address, from gas, electricity, water and telecommunications companies, to loyalty cards, magazine subscriptions and even banks.

It will eliminate the need for tiresome queuing on the phone and sending numerous letters - and the service is free.

Internet users simply input their old and new addresses once, select the services they wish to inform and then add a few security details required by each company. Residents in Spelthorne simply go to the Borough Council's website at www.spelthorne.gov.uk and click on the "Moving Home" section to access the service.

Surrey County Council and all 11 Borough and District Councils are now able to offer the new timesaving feature in conjunction with ihavemoved.com, which has also secured the participation of over 750 other services, including many household names. Customers of British Gas and Thames Water are among those who will benefit from the new scheme.

All the local authorities will be able to update their records swiftly and accurately for purposes such as electoral registration, library membership and council tax collection. Residents are also able to notify central government agencies such as the Department for Work and Pensions (formerly the DSS), the Inland Revenue, the DVLA and the NHS of address changes by email.

Nigel Hannam, E-service Programme Director at Surrey County Council, says:

"All the details supplied by the web-site user are transferred over a secure connection which is then received electronically by both the County Council and the Borough or District Council."

"We feel positive that this revolutionary style of customer service, now available to our residents on-line, will significantly reduce their administration chores when moving."

Donald Kirkpatrick, Head of Government Affairs at ihavemoved.com adds:

"We are delighted to be providing the change of address site for Surrey councils and this development of their web-site is a key ingredient in the e-government modernisation agenda."
