Getting on in Stanwell
Published 06.02.2007 13:58
Four weeks on and Stanwell’s senior citizens are settling into their new surroundings at the Lord Knyvett Hall, which is fast becoming a lively and busy environment.  Both staff and those using the hall are determined to build on the goodwill that existed at the former Stanwell Day Centre.

Plans continue to redevelop the site with a new health centre and range of other improvements.  Of course it is recognised that the temporary facility does not match what the day centre offered, but those who have committed to support this service by continuing with their membership look forward to their visits.  There is an arts group who meet on a Tuesday morning and the exercise class on Thursday morning is well supported.  Games such as scrabble can be played by those who are interested.

A variety of hot drinks and toast is available on request during the morning whilst the lunchtime service includes soup, jacket potatoes with various fillings, sandwiches served with salad and those members who require a hot meal are catered for by Wiltshire Farm Foods.

Gloria Tagg, a regular visitor and volunteer commented

“This is where senior citizens of Stanwell can still come for a few friendly hours.  It is quite a small area, but you only have to hear the happy voices of our members to know that we are on the right path as it were!  The staff and volunteers are always here to lend a helping hand.  Give us a chance – it is early days and there is much to be done.”

Pat Hughes said
“I believe that it is more friendly here than our other location.  It encourages us to mix more.”

Gwynneth Sperling commented,

“I enjoy the company even though this is not as convenient a location for many people.  The snacks are good but perhaps a range of home made food could be considered.”

Linda Dennis added “In the winter months it is proving to be very cosy and friendly and I am sure in the summer it will be very pleasant to be able to use the gardens as well as the hall.  Long may this extremely pleasant and friendly meeting place for the older generation go on.”

Cllr Vivienne Leighton commented,
“It is good to hear that most people are reacting to these new arrangements with goodwill and a positive attitude.  We are listening to all comments from the users and we will work together to make this temporary site as effective and welcoming as we can while the old site is redeveloped into the purpose built facility needed so much in Stanwell.  We have all put a great deal of hope and anticipation into the proposed new health centre on which the Primary Care Trust is taking the lead.  This would make such a difference to the local community."
