Last weekend (23-24 June) 180 young people from Spelthorne took part in the Surrey Youth Games. The Surrey Youth Games is the biggest youth sports event in Surrey attracting around 2400 young people each year. Team Spelthorne, sponsored by everyoneactive.com, won 14 medals coming second overall out of the 11 surrey boroughs.  This was an improvement on last years’ efforts and the best ever results for Spelthorne in the 11 years the Surrey Youth Games have been running.

Spelthorne competitors excelled throughout the weekend winning:

Gold medal in: Futsal

Silver medals in: badminton; basketball (boys); basketball (girls); hockey (senior boys); judo (junior boys and senior boys) and squash (junior and senior mixed)

Bronze medals in: athletics; football (junior and senior girls); hockey (junior mixed); judo (senior girls) and tennis (senior mixed)

All of the competitors at the games had received 6-10 weeks of training from coaches and volunteers around Spelthorne. It is hoped that through this years games many of the young people involved will have joined local sports clubs.

Councillor Denise Grant, Portfolio Holder for Children and Young People commented:

“The Surrey Youth Games continues to provide an excellent opportunity for young people from across the county to test their skills against each other. It is great to see so many young people with an interest in sport learning so many skills through their interest, such as team work, commitment and determination. It is also fantastic to see the support these young people receive from the many coaches and volunteers that help prepare them for the event over a number of weeks and months. Without the commitment of these people none of this would be possible.”

The Boccia teams played a crucial part in Team Spelthorne’s success, securing forth place and fifth places for the two age groups.

The boys basketball came down to the last throw of the last game, with Spelthorne just missing out on the gold medal.

In July all of the young people from Spelthorne who competed in the games will have the opportunity to celebrate their achievements at the annual sports awards evening.
