Mayor of Spelthorne, Councillor Andrew Hirst, presenting a cheque to the Save the Children foundation

The Mayor of Spelthorne, Cllr Andrew Hirst, presented a cheque for £16,000 from Abitibi-Consolidated Recycling Europe to the charity, Save the Children, on Tuesday 24 July in the Chamber at the Council Offices.

The money was generated by Spelthorne Council contractor Abitibi-Consolidated donating £1 to charity, on Spelthorne’s behalf, for every tonne of paper collected in the Borough from curbsides and banks for recycling.

Cllr Andrew Hirst, Mayor of Spelthorne, said:

“It is amazing just how much money has accumulated in Spelthorne over the years from this contribution.  It makes recycling an even more valuable habit to get into.  The large sum of money being donated will make a huge difference to this important charity.”

David Jaffa, UK operations manager, Abitibi-Consolidated Recycling Europe said:

"This is a win-win situation for those who recycle in Spelthorne. Not only have they made a positive contribution towards the environment, but in the process we have been able to make a substantial donation to a truly worthwhile charity that fights for children in the UK and around the world who suffer from poverty, disease, injustice and violence.“

Mrs Sarah Bardswell from Save the Children said:

“I am delighted we were the nominated charity.  This donation will make such a difference to so many lives.  Thank you to all those in Spelthorne who recycle their waste paper.”
