Meals on Wheels Diamond Jubilee
Published 24.09.2007 17:12
Spelthorne Council will celebrate the Meals on Wheels Diamond Jubilee when  the Mayor and Mayoress, Councillor Andrew Hirst and his wife Louise and Councillor Vivienne Leighton, Portfolio Holder for Adult and Elderly Services, will be delivering meals on Monday 1 October 2007.

A number of important changes have taken place to the Meals on Wheels service nationally since it was started in 1947 by a few volunteers from the Women’s Voluntary Service (now Women’s Royal Voluntary Service).

In Spelthorne, the Borough Council has run Meals on Wheels locally since1997 and today is the major funder, running a seven-day a week service which, with the help of 25 volunteers, supports 180 clients.

The almost 1,000 meals delivered every week help frail and vulnerable people in the Borough continue to live independently in their own homes for as long as possible. Nationally over 40 million meals on wheels are served each year to around 200,000 people. Meals on Wheels forms a small but important part of Spelthorne’s Older People’s Services for which direct and indirect provision is to the value of some £1.4m a year.

Councillor Vivienne Leighton, Portfolio Holder for Adult and Elderly Services said:

“Spelthorne is happy to join this national celebration for a vital service. Healthy eating is important for everyone and every day Meals on Wheels provides this fundamental support for older people in our community.  It is a tribute to the importance of this service that it has run for 60 years.”
