| The National Meals on Wheels service celebrates its diamond jubilee this year. Meals on Wheels week runs from 1 – 7 October and the Mayors for Meals Day took place on 3 October. In Spelthorne, the Mayor and Mayoress, Councillor Andrew Hirst and his wife Louise and Councillor Vivienne Leighton, Portfolio Holder for Adult and Elderly Services, delivered meals on one round during Monday 1 October 2007. A number of important changes have taken place to the service nationally since it in started in 1947 by a few volunteers from the Women’s Voluntary Service (now Women’s Royal Voluntary Service). In Spelthorne, some 950 meals are delivered every week to make sure that vulnerable people in the Borough can continue to live independently in their own homes for as long as possible. The service is loyally supported by a number of volunteers, some of whom have been helping with the delivery of meals in all weathers for over 10 years. Nationally over 40 million meals on wheels are served annually to around 200,000 people. Councillor Vivienne Leighton, Portfolio Holder for Adult and Elderly Services said: “Spelthorne is happy to join this national celebration for a vital service. Meals on Wheels is right at the front of preventing malnutrition among older people in the community. It is a tribute to the importance of this service that it has run for 60 years.” For further information please ring 01784 446297 or 444260. |
