Spelthorne’s junior youth council (JYC) have been working on a campaign to help stop bullying. The junior councillors highlighted bullying as one of the main issues faced by their age group (8-11 yrs) and wanted to do something to raise awareness.

Following a workshop at the JYC, with a representative from the Anti-Bullying Alliance, the junior councillors agreed that a poster campaign would be the best way of highlighting the issue. The posters are bright and colourful and depict images and slogans designed to highlight the issues of bullying.

The junior councillors are hoping that the poster campaign will encourage victims of bullying to speak to an adult, teacher or peer. They are also hoping that the campaign will reach those who bully and help them to recognise the consequences of their actions.

The councillors have been working on the campaign over the past two months and launched their campaign during anti-bullying week on 21 November 2007. The posters will be distributed to schools and community groups, who will be asked to support the campaign by displaying the posters.

The councillors encouraged their schools to take part in Blue Friday on 23 November 2007. This involved both the pupils and teachers wearing an item of Blue clothing to again raise awareness of bullying.

Each Junior Councillor has also been given a pin badge which will reflect their commitment to stop bullying. It will also tell other children that they are friendly and can speak to them about any issues they have.

The JYC hope that people support their campaign and that they help stop bullying within Spelthorne.

Cllr Denise Grant, Portfolio Holder for Children and Young People, said:

“This project has been a good opportunity for the JYC to look at a real issue faced by this age group and to try and make a difference within the local community”.
