Spelthorne Sports Awards 2011

Spelthorne recently celebrated the successes of players, coaches and volunteers at its annual Sports Awards.

This year’s awards, sponsored by Kempton Park and Benedict Ford Thorne Chartered Accountants, were held in the premier suite at Kempton Park Racecourse on 14 July.

The awards, organised by Spelthorne Borough Council and Spelthorne Sports Council, recognised those who have performed exceptionally well throughout the year as well as those who have helped others reach their goals or shown exceptional commitment and dedication to their clubs or sport.

Special guest at the awards was Louise Sugden a paralympian wheelchair basketball player for Great Britain who also coaches the Surrey Rams Wheelchair basketball club who train locally at Sunbury Leisure Centre.

Spelthorne’s Surrey Youth Games teams were also recognised for their many successes including gold medal wins for the girl’s hockey team and the senior squash team.

The Youth Games part of the evening was presented by four young volunteers who had helped with the coaching of team Spelthorne and at the games weekend.

Councillor Penny Forbes-Forsyth, Cabinet Member for Parks and Leisure said, “Congratulations to all who won medals and those who participated. A very special thank you to all who gave of their time and skill so generously to help our youth succeed. I hope you all celebrate and enjoy a much deserved sense of achievement”.

A full list of winners of the Spelthorne Sports Awards is below.

Junior individual Male

Winner – Jason Harbor
A windsurfer representing Great Britain for his age group and class. When he’s not windsurfing himself he is coaching youngsters how to surf.

Runner up- Roman Malin-Hiscoch
A member of the Wasps RFC academy and the Harlequins Rugby League academy. He broke 3 Spelthorne district records and is Spelthorne district cross country champion.

Junior individual Female

Winner – Lauren Hill
An acrobatic gymnast who was part of the women’s pair that came 2nd in the Switzerland international, part of the trio who came 1st in the 11-16 age group at the Belgium international and who came 3rd at the British championships. She has also attended the European trials to represent Great Britain

Runner up - Abigail Mason
A talented rower, who is excelling at her chosen sport and finished 2nd at the junior international indoor rowing championships.

Junior Sports Team

Winner – London Irish U11’s
The Team have gone unbeaten throughout the 2010-11 season, and have won a large number of festivals and competitions.

Runner Up - The Staines Swimming Club Diddy League A Team
The team of 9 – 12 year olds finished 6th in the District area final which is the highest placing for Staines in the modern records began in 2003. The individuals in the team all stepped up showing personal best times and performing elite level skills with perfection.

Senior Sports Team

Winner – Spelthorne Sports Football Club 1st Eleven
Completed a league and cup double victory by winning the Surrey Elite Intermediate League and the Surrey intermediate Challenge cup. Their league success means they won promotion to the combined counties league which covers levels 9 and 10 of the English Football League System.

Runner up - Staines Swimming Club’s National Team
The team finished 8th in the south East of England which is the highest national league placing for the club ever.

School/College Achievement

Winner – Sunbury Manor Girl’s Football
All girl’s teams at the school have been unbeaten for the whole of the 2010-11 season. The U11’s, U14’s and U16s all won the district league.

Runner up - The Matthew Arnold Year 11 Football Team
Spelthorne district winners at 7 a-side, league and cup as well as reaching the quarter final of the Surrey county cup.

Junior Good Sport

Winner – Thomas Curran
Thomas is visually impaired but despite his disability his enthusiasm shines through. He encourages everyone to participate, leads groups in alternative sports and alerts everyone to events.

Runner up - Luke Wivell
Luke has been playing badminton since he was 7. He supports the club in all events despite only being 10 years old and has begun to show leadership qualities.

Volunteer of the year

Winner – Lindsay Thuringer
Treasurer for Staines Swimming club. She is responsible for the book keeping, paying of bills, petty cash, banking, invoicing, bank reconciliation, timesheets etc and gives a huge amount of time behind the scenes.

Runner up - Andy Kelly
Club captain and fixtures secretary for the adult section of Racqueteers badminton Club and also helps support the junior section. Andy is also a regular volunteer at Spelthorne Disability sports club.

Outstanding individual performance

Winner – Jessica Hunter
A Boccia Player for Great Britain. She has been selected to represent Great Britain in both pairs and the individual event at the world cup in August 2011 and is also part of the potential GB 2012 Paralympic squad.

Runner up - Ruth Scalan
Reached the semi finals in the 50metre free style event at the British Championships and is now ranked 21st in the country for this event.

Coach of the year

Winner - Terry Moore
Coach for Staines Boat Club who has put many hours in to help encourage people into rowing and help them reach potential and has done a great job building up the woman’s squad.

Runner up - Jim Mathieson
Coach for Burway Rowing club who has helped increase participation and has also helped coach athletes that have won the European Championships, Home Counties and Nationals.

Exceptional services to Sport

Winners – Roy Miller
Roy established Staines strollers running club 14 years ago and has given a vast amount of time to ensure the club continues.In addition Roy is also the Captain of the Weyfarers rowing club.

Runner up - Sharon Baker
Worked on a voluntary basis for almost 20 years helping to provide football for children in Spelthorne.  In 1996 Sharon and her husband founded Staines Albion Youth Football club and Sharon continues to be heavily involved with the Club.

Special Achievement Award

Winner - Tom Ready
Deputy Head teacher of St Ignatius Catholic Primary School, whose enthusiasm, dedication and commitment to coaching sports goes above and beyond the call of duty. He gives up countless hours of his own time encouraging children to participate in sport.

Lifetime Achievement Award
Winner - Sheila Collins
Sheila set up Racqueteers junior badminton club 28 years ago and has helped the club grow from strength to strength since then. She helped the club achieve Clubmark 2003 making it the first badminton club in the country to achieve this.
