Cabinet updated on Spelthorne’s leisure programme
Published 25.02.2011 16:46
Spelthorne Council’s Cabinet were updated on the progress of the leisure and culture strategy at a meeting held on Tuesday 15 February.

The leisure and culture strategy provides direction for the provision of leisure services within Spelthorne and runs from 2008-2012. It provides a framework of policies, objectives and actions that guide the Council’s delivery of leisure and culture opportunities to benefit the health, well-being and enjoyment of residents. It is led by Leisure Services in association with a range of other agencies.

Leisure Services coordinated a wide range of events throughout the past year, including Surrey Youth Games training sessions for team Spelthorne, sports taster sessions, performing arts activities, art and craft open days, skate nights, the MEND programme and get active schemes. The team are also responsible for monitoring the contract for the management of Spelthorne and Sunbury Leisure Centres.

In the school summer holidays in 2010, the team coordinated performing arts workshops and physical activity sessions for young people and a variety of events such as Urban Jamming and Play Day. Since September 2010 the Leisure team have had free use of the Surrey County Council Leacroft Centre two evenings per week for running sports and arts sessions for young people, which proved to be very popular.

The team seek to gain external funding wherever possible and last year received over £10,000 from sponsorship in addition to £198,000 of Big Lottery Fund grant money which was awarded in 2007 and has been used for various projects over the last 3 years. Income is also gained from the Leisure Centre contract and charges for activities such as the hiring of dance mat equipment and art and craft clubs.

Cllr Denise Grant, Cabinet Member for Young People and Culture said: “The team is providing an excellent range of leisure opportunities for people of all ages in Spelthorne and we are looking forward to another successful year in 2011”.
