Liberal Democrat Group Leader elected
Published 20.05.2011 14:51
Councillor Ian Beardsmore, Sunbury Common Ward

The new Leader of the Liberal Democrats (minority) group on Spelthorne Council is Councillor Ian Beardsmore.

Councillor Beardsmore, who represents Sunbury Common, was formally adopted as Leader of the Liberal Democrat group at a meeting of the party held on 16 May.

Councillor Beardsmore was first elected to the Council in 1991 and has served several terms as Deputy Leader or Leader of the Liberal Democrat Group. He serves as a County Councillor and, along with Cllr Denise Grant, is Spelthorne’s longest serving councillor. He is a lifelong Sunbury resident and a qualified swimming teacher.

Cllr Beardsmore said: “With more than half the councillors being new to the Council, the biggest challenge is going to be getting them up to speed at a very difficult time.”

Cllr Sandra Dunn has been announced as Deputy Leader for the group. She was first elected to the Council in 2007 and last year served on the Licensing and Planning Committees.
