Local improvements celebrated

Three events have been held in Spelthorne to celebrate the recent improvements to the shopping areas of Ashford, Shepperton and Sunbury Cross.

A total of £600,000 (£200,000 for each area) was invested by Spelthorne Council and Surrey County Council after consultation with local residents and businesses to agree what improvements were most needed.

The events were at:

Sunbury regeneration project Sunbury Cross – Thursday 17 March at 12.15pm
The Mayor cut the ribbon by the Sunbury Clock followed by a reception at the Royal British Legion.


Regeneration project for Shepperton Shepperton – Saturday 19 March at 10.30am
The Mayor was at the Village Hall in the High Street and was joined by pupils from St Nicholas Church of England Primary School, whose ideas and drawings were used to develop new history boards.

Regeneration project for Ashford Ashford – Saturday 19 March at 11.45am
The Mayor was joined at the new Town Square in the High Street by Urban Dance who performed some of their routines.

Deputy Chief Executive Nigel Lynn said: “The Council is delighted to have been able to make these improvements and thanks are due to our friends in a number of organisations who have made it possible including, most importantly, local people. Sunbury has had a face lift with new trees, there will be a skate part for young people and CCTV to help combat local crime and disorder. The Underpass has been cleaned and re-painted to make it more pleasant to use."

In Ashford, and following consultation with local residents and businesses, an estimated £200.000 has been invested over the last three years to install new town square seating, trees, litter bins.  A new town clock and CCTV has been installed

The War memorial has been lighted and flag pole repainted

This goes alongside deep cleaning the car parks, stairwells and pavements and repainting road markings and replacing street signs.

In Shepperton, and again following considerable consultation with local residents and businesses, an estimated £200.000 has been invested here over the last three years to improve the Village Hall frontage. There are now general notice boards, pavements and new kerbs in the High Street, new trees and a history board designed by the children of St Nicholas School.

“I think these are local improvements for local people of which everyone involved can be rightly proud."
