MEND success in Spelthorne
Published 08.04.2011 14:39
15 young people recently graduated from Spelthorne’s sixth MEND Scheme (Mind, Exercise, Nutrition…Do it).

The scheme is part of a national healthy living programme for young people aged
7-13 who would like to adopt a healthier lifestyle. It is run by Spelthorne Borough Council in partnership with NHS Surrey with funding from Big Lottery.

The young people and their parents attended MEND twice a week for 10 weeks. They learnt about healthy eating and took part in fun organised physical activity sessions and active games. The scheme included a supermarket trip where the young people learnt about food labelling and choosing healthier foods. They also took part in a ‘cook and eat’ session where the families cooked and tasted `MEND friendly’ food, enabling them to experience new foods and flavours.

The young people worked very hard to achieve nutrition and physical activity targets each week, gaining many health benefits and meeting new friends.

For details of the next MEND scheme please contact Leisure Services on 01784 446433 or e-mail leisure@spelthorne.gov.uk. There is no charge to attend the programme but we will need to assess whether a child qualifies, based on their age, weight and health.
