Winners 2011 Kingscroft: Victory smiles: From left, Lisa Kent, Joshua Ellis and Oliver Powell with Cllr Robin Sider and Spelthorne Mayor Cllr Sam Budd

Kingscroft Junior School scored a hat-trick by winning the annual Spelthorne Schools Quiz, in a close contest which tested the contestants’ knowledge on everything from community to cartoons.

Kingscroft’s victorious team comprised Lisa Kent, Oliver Powell and Joshua Ellis. The school was joint runner-up in last year’s quiz and this is their third victory since the event was launched nine years ago.

Runners-up were 2010 winners, Staines Preparatory School.

Children aged 10 to 11 from eight of the Borough’s primary schools attended the quiz on 8 July, which took place in the Council Chamber. They tackled questions on a variety of topics including geography, famous characters, sports and games and some tricky questions about Spelthorne.

The question master was former Spelthorne Junior School head teacher Nobby Clarke.

The inspiration behind the annual schools quiz – Deputy Mayor, Cllr Robin Sider – was in the audience to see the teams do battle. He instigated the event when he was Borough Mayor in 2002-3.

Guest of honour was Spelthorne Mayor, Cllr Sam Budd. He presented the winners with a cup to keep for a year, shields and £50 of bookshop vouchers donated by Waterstones, Staines.  The runner-up team received shields and £25 of Waterstones vouchers sponsored by Spelthorne Council.

During the half-time break the children tucked into a buffet of fresh fruit kindly donated by Sainsbury’s, Staines.

The Mayor commented: “I was very impressed with the enthusiasm and knowledge of all of the children who took part. It was a closely-fought contest – very enjoyable and fast-paced. Congratulations to Kingscroft Junior School for being the eventual winners.”
