Smoke free England

At 6am on 1 July 2007 The Health Act (2006) became law and this means that it is illegal to smoke in enclosed public and workplaces in England, in fact anywhere in the UK.

The new law ensures that most of us will be able to work, socialise, relax, travel and shop in enclosed environments free from secondhand smoke.

Businesses should have received information and the no smoking signs from smokefree England in addition Environmental Health have been providing information and advice.

This is what you need to do now that England has become smokefree:-

take reasonable steps to ensure that staff, customers, members and visitors are aware that premises and vehicles are legally required to be smokefree
close any existing indoor smoking rooms
display ‘no-smoking’ signs in smokefree premises and vehicles
ensure that no one smokes in smokefree premises or vehicles.

You may also wish to:

develop a smokefree policy in consultation with staff
provide your staff and customers with support to quit smoking.
