  Food digesters

Food waste is about the worst kind of waste that a household can produce. Organic waste such as…

  • leftover food
  • vegetable peelings
  • fruit skins/cores/pips
  • out of date meat, cheese and yoghurt
…does not rot effectively in landfill.  A process called anaerobic digestion occurs and methane is produced.

As one of the greenhouse gases, methane is up to 13 times more potent than carbon dioxide, meaning that landfill sites become a huge contributor to global warming.

Food waste is also probably what makes your bin smelly.

Get rid of it

Green Cone food digester Spelthorne Council has teamed up with Great Green Systems Ltd
to supply the popular Green Cone food digester and the Green Johanna to residents in the Borough at a greatly reduced rate.

Either item will be able to take wasted food from the entire family and dispose of it effectively and responsibly.  By diverting organic materials from your rubbish bin, emissions of dangerous methane at landfill sites are reduced and the likelihood of unpleasant smells from your bin is eliminated.
Food digesters can be purchased directly from the Great Green Systems Ltd website, www.greatgreensystems.com (external website), by typing in your postcode at the following prices:

Green Cone £15 plus £9.95 delivery charge
Green Johanna £20 plus £9.95 delivery charge

What people have said

"It is definitely a great idea to help reduce amounts of rubbish, making your own compost and therefore helping to reduce CO2 emissions"

"We are really pleased with our food digester and find that it works very well.  We have previously used a compost bin, but we like the fact that it can take all types of food cooked and raw.  The fact that we bought it for only £15 is fantastic"

"We are extremely pleased with the digester and appreciate the council making them available at an affordable cost"

"I am not an eco warrior by any means but using the Green Johanna has really brought home to me how much household food and garden waste can be used productively."

"Everybody should have a food digester."
