The facilities at both leisure centres were also free for the day. A parade was held in which local children, who had previously made torches to celebrate the event, took part. Rihanna Tavengwa carried the main torch on the first leg of the parade and handed it over to Nutty the Squirrel, Spelthorne Borough Council’s mascot. After completing his leg, Nutty then handed the torch over to the Mayor of Spelthorne, Councillor Simon Bhadye, who completed the last leg before raising the handover flag for Spelthorne at the same time that Boris Johnson officially accepted the flag in Beijing. Staines Brass band performed during the relay procession and flag raising ceremony.
Cllr Denise Grant, Portfolio Holder for Children and Young people commented ‘The Olympics coming to London provides a wonderful opportunity for children and young people to get involved with sports. We are pleased to be able to host taster sessions in a number of Olympic sports and hope that it will inspire local children to take up some of the activities.’
