This year’s competition launched at P&G’s UK Headquarters
The Active Surrey Sports Partnership, organiser of the Surrey Youth Games (SYG), has signed a three year sponsorship deal with Procter & Gamble worth £50,000. This year’s competition will be launched at P&G’s UK Headquarters at the Heights, Brooklands, Weybridge on 16 March, from 11am-1pm.
The Surrey Youth Games form the focal point for sports development throughout Surrey. More than 2,600 young athletes and possibly sports stars of the future will represent their Borough at the Games in June. The Sports included are athletics, badminton, basketball, boccia (similar to bowls), fencing, football, hockey, judo, netball, rugby, squash and tennis. Fencing will be demonstrated at the launch.
The launch will be attended by a number of VIP guests, including the Mayors and Chairmen of the Surrey Boroughs and Districts, the Sport Development Officers from each of the 11 Boroughs, the SYG Management Group and five VIP Sports people talking about how they see the SYG promoting their sport.
The Surrey Youth Games are organised by the Active Surrey Sport Partnership in conjunction with the 11 Boroughs, Surrey County Council and Sport England. The 11 local authorities in Surrey represented in the Games are: Elmbridge, Epsom and Ewell; Guildford, Mole Valley, Reigate and Banstead, Runnymede, Spelthorne, Surrey Heath, Tandridge, Waverley and Woking. The sports included in the Games must have demonstrated a pathway to local clubs so that young people can continue in their chosen sport after the event through a positive sporting experience. More than 300 volunteers work hard to make the Games run smoothly and provide a showcase for Surrey’s future young sports champions.
Dr. Brian Perry, P&G’s Community Matters Manager said: “P&G are really excited about becoming Surrey Youth Games title sponsor and partner. P&G is stepping up its focus on the development of children through a global platform ‘Live, Learn and Thrive’. Our resources will help children live by ensuring they have healthy starts, provide them with places, tools and programmes that enhance their ability to learn, and give them access to programmes that help develop the self-esteem and life-skills they need to thrive. This is about getting children involved in sport and making sure as many clubs as possible benefit from the Games so children participate in sport for years to come.”
Sue Barham, chair of the SYG Management Group said: “I am pleased that Procter & Gamble have agreed to take over the sponsorship of the Surrey Youth Games from BAA Gatwick, our sponsors for the past 10 years. I look forward to building a strong and purposeful relationship with them for the benefit of the 2600 young people who take part in the Games each year”.
