  Index Multiple Deprivation 2007

The English Indices of Deprivation 2007 are the Government’s official measure of multiple deprivation and provide a powerful tool for the identification and analysis of deprived areas across England.

The Indices are based on a small area geography known as a Lower Layer Super Output Area (LSOA). These areas are usually smaller areas than wards and have an average population of 1,500 people, so smaller pockets of deprivation can be identified.

Index of Multiple Deprivation

The Index of Multiple Deprivation (IMD 2007) is a measure of multiple deprivation and is based on the idea of distinct aspects or dimensions of deprivation which can be recognised and measured separately. The IMD 2007 combines a number of indicators, covering economic, social and housing issues into a single deprivation score for each LSOA in England. This allows different areas to be ranked relative to one another according to their level of deprivation.

The IMD 2007 is based on the approach, structure and methodology that was used to create the previous ID 2004. Each of the 32,482 LSOAs in England is assigned a score and rank for each domain. The LSOA with a rank of 1 is the most deprived and the LSOA with a rank of 32,482, the least.
